Reading to your child can be such a peaceful time that it’s hard to believe so much is happening during this simple and relaxing activity. Here are some of the benefits:

A regular reading ritual helps kids feel safe and secure. It’s a chance to be close to mom or dad. Over time, kids see that this is one of the things that happen every night. Being quiet and still is also a great way to transition to bedtime. A book read aloud has a rhythm that’s pleasant and soothing.

Hearing books read aloud can support the process of language development, even for kids who are only babies now. Later, books are a great way to keep language skills growing strong – by teaching new words and helping kids make the connections between sounds and objects.

When parents read to kids, it helps them build the skills they need to become readers themselves. And even older kids who know how to read still like hearing a parent’s voice and sharing some quiet time together. You might take turns – you read a chapter and then let your child read to you.

Tips from real parents:
I keep books in the car and diaper bag so I have them handy when there's time to fill away from home.
