Kids Interview Their Grandparents
<<Back to Ready for Life

Some kids see their grandparents every day. For others, it might be a once-a-year event. But either way, kids will appreciate the chance to get to know their grandparents better. One way to do that is to have kids “interview” them. Help your child come up with a list of questions.

Here are some to consider:

  • Where did you live when you were little?
  • How many brothers and sisters did you have?
  • What did your parents do for jobs?
  • What was school like? Did you have a favorite subject?
  • Did you play sports or do any activities?
  • What were holidays like when you were little?
  • Did you have a favorite toy?
  • Did you have a favorite food?
  • How did you meet Grandma/Grandpa?
  • What was my Dad or Mom like when he/she was little?
Kids Interview Their Grandparents

You can help by figuring out how to record the Q & A session. It can be done using pen and paper or even email. But a tape recorder or video recorder might be the best choice then you’ll have a lasting record of your family history and your child can enjoy it again years later.

Tips from real parents:
My sons’ grandmother lives in Pittsburgh and we only see her about three or four times per year. But they talk to her on the phone often, and she sends them cards or silly, little inexpensive gifts. She also has gotten into Harry Potter and has read all of the books and talks to them about Harry's world, and sees the movies too! They love that!
