A child’s bedtime routine can be about more than getting into pajamas and brushing teeth. It’s a time of day that’s perfect for connecting with your child. Bedtime offers a chance to slow down, dim the lights, and enjoy the calm.

Create a simple routine that involves spending time together. Reading a book, saying a goodnight prayer together, or just taking a moment to talk are excellent ways to help children relax and switch gears so they can fall asleep. Once your child is ready for bed, spending a few minutes together in the quiet of nighttime helps your child feel loved and safe, relaxed, and ready to enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep. This special time also teaches kids how to wind down, so eventually, when they’re older, they can fall happily asleep on their own.

Here are some calming bedtime conversation starters:

  • Let your child know he or she needs to be active, but that there’s a long list of possibilities. Then support your child as he or she tries different sports and activities.
  • Some kids like a sport but are discouraged because they are not as skilled as their teammates. If that sounds like your child, look for clinics he or she could attend and encourage continued practice.
  • If competition turns your child off, look for noncompetitive leagues and clubs. Talk with coaches and other parents about what that league or club is like.

Tips from real parents:
My daughter loves it when I name all the animals that are getting ready for sleep, too. She closes her eyes and I talk about little birds with fluffy feathers snuggled together in a nest, a baby rabbit and mama rabbit nestled together in the forest, or whatever creatures come to mind.
